For admission to a PhD, you normally need a Bachelor degree with Honours Class 1 or 2A, or approved equivalent. Therefore you will need to have completed a postgraduate qualification:

  • that is equivalent to at least AQF 8 or 9
  • with Distinction overall in that qualification (75%)
  • with a research thesis/dissertation equivalent to 6 months’ full-time study of at least 15,000 words OR equivalent research experience, including a substantial first author refereed publication.

Direct entry into a PhD is also dependent on the strength of your research background and you may be required to undertake a qualifying program if your research profile is not considered sufficient. Refer to Check your eligibility for information about additional admission requirements for PhD entry. NB: Australian and New Zealand citizens, select ‘switch to Domestic’ in the topic right hand corner.
